Abstract:

Motivated by the possibility that the performance in iconic memory predicts cognitive decline in the elderly, we investigated the decay function of sensory representation in two experiments. Given the same set of visual stimuli, the retention/retrieval of color information lasted longer than that of shape information. Brain areas involved in the color iconic memory differed from those involved in the shape iconic memory. These two findings provided us with some insights regarding the neural processes underlying sensorial persistence, and the neural basis of perceptual memory and its decline in neurodegenerative disorders.
